Product Durability

Meticulous testing is a never-ending process.

It’s no secret that Life Fitness products are built to stand up to the test of time. Our products go through thousands of hours of rigorous testing – from the durability of every major component to the reliability of how well the components all work together. This is the focus of our full-time Reliability Engineers. Through intricate computer analysis and mechanical robotic testing, they ensure everything that goes into our products is tough enough to take on the rigors of daily operation.

Testing our limits from the assembly line to health clubs.

When our equipment begins to be assembled on the manufacturing floor, our reliability team monitors the production process and conducts a long list of quality control tests. Because of our industry leadership and established relationships with fitness facilities around the world, our team is able to place new exercise machines for testing in all types of facilities. This allows us to understand how well our products will stand up to high levels of usage and allows us to analyze how people will interact with the new functions and features. More reasons why Life Fitness cardio and strength-training equipment is built to last anywhere it is used.

Our reliability standards are proven around the world.

Every outside professional testing certification and organization associated with product quality endorses our methods of testing, component durability, quality control, and product reliability. It’s this third-party guarantee that ensures Life Fitness equipment is made to last.

Life Fitness Testing Standards 101

International Standards Organization (ISO) 9001 Certification
An international standard intended to ensure that all aspects of a company’s business have the necessary systems and procedures in place so that the product is designed and manufactured to meet consistent quality standards. Adherence to this standard is audited by an independent organization.

Canadian Standards Association (CSA)
A not-for-profit, membership-based association serving business, industry, government, and consumers in Canada and the global marketplace. They develop standards that address real needs such as enhancing public safety and health, advancing the quality of life, preserving the environment, and facilitating trade.

TUV (Technischer Uberwachungsverein) Certification
English translation: Technical Inspection Association. TUV is a German product testing and standards association that helps the industry access and excel in global markets with over 1,500 staff located in 30 countries.

CE (Compliance Engineering) Mark of Quality
Exporting electrical products to countries of the European Union has required meeting a series of directives and specifications. Notice of compliance is done by affixing a "CE" mark to the label of the product.

CEN (European Committee for Standardization)
CEN’s mission is to diminish trade barriers, promote safety, allow interoperability of products, systems and services, and promote common technical understanding. EN957, a European Safety Standard, pertains to fitness equipment standards.

Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) Certified
This independent, not-for-profit product safety testing and certification organization has been testing products for public safety for more than 100 years. Their U.S. and international services certify that Life Fitness products achieve global acceptance, whether it’s for an electrical device, a programmable system, or an organization’s entire quality process.

LF Case Study #97

Treadmill Sound Testing
Using a specialized, sound-contained laboratory, our reliability engineers studied Life Fitness treadmills in operation to discover the origins of unwanted noise and vibration. Multiple microphones and recording devices were placed above and to the side of the treadmill in order to simulate where the average exerciser might hear any sounds resonating from the treadmill’s internal components. Ultimately, these tests led to minimizing the amount of noise coming from the motor, running platform, and incline/decline levels.

LF Case Study #112

Our reliability engineering team created a set of patented robots that test unique features of our products: the pedals on our cross-trainers, the platform on our treadmills, the seat on our Lifecycle bikes, the steps on our stairclimbers. Each robot is monitored to track the testing progress that occurs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
